It’s that time of year we look internationally for some peak inspiration (and friendly competition), courtesy of the British Hairdressing Awards. The event took place on November 27, with 1500 attendees there to see which talented hairdressers would take home the gold.
Compered by TV presenter Cat Deeley, alongside HJ’s executive director, Jayne Lewis-Orr, the evening provided plenty of highlights, including the awards presentation, a performance by pop group Boyzlife and the Schwarzkopf Professional Essential Looks collection show. The highlight of the night was the presentation of Britain’s most coveted award, British Hairdresser of the Year, this year presented to Sally Brooks, who is the first woman to win the award since 2005.
“I never thought I’d be standing on stage accepting this award, especially as I was up against such amazing hairdressers that I respect so much,” Sally said when she was welcome to the stage with a standing ovation. “Thank you to my amazing team and the support they give to me and each other, and thank you to my photographer, Jenny Hands. She was the first photographer I worked with back when we were test shooting. I couldn’t have done this without her!”
“Each year, British hairdressing goes from strength to strength,” Jayne shared. “These awards serve to celebrate not just the sheer technical skill involved in making the images, but also the creativity and vision behind them. Each winner has demonstrated an ability to dream big, then bring that concept to life in imagery that’s beautiful, inspiring and directional.”
Other big winners from the night included Mark Leeson Salons and Russell Eaton Salons, each of which won three awards. The 16 category awards list includes regional divides, as well as recognition for specific skills such as Avant Garde, Afro, Men’s, Colour and emerging talent.
“It was an amazing night, full of incredible talent and creativity,” shared Stuart Hamid, Schwarzkopf Professional General Manager. “It truly was a celebration of hairdressing and outstanding collections! Congratulations to Sally Brooks, our British Hairdresser of the Year 2017 – a well-deserved win!”
