Premier hair straightening education was brought to Australia by Japanese hair brand Yuko and their global educator, Satoshi Kimura, also from Japan. Four national ambassador salons Doowop Hair, Sloans of Lane Cove, Tsikinaris Hair and Maison Tsumiki, hosted dozens of attendees from 18 salons in total, with the objective of learning the sometimes seemingly impossible – straight hair that doesn’t sacrifice moisture or gloss.

Among the topics presented included how to safely straighten lightened hair using a new technique developed in Japan. Demonstrating on a model with highly bleached, ombré hair, Satoshi used a combination of Cosme B 1 and Anti-Frizz Solution to safely straighten her hair. Cosme B works on an Acid pH, while Anti-Frizz softens the bonds and helps to smooth the hair. Satoshi also showed off a new technique using two Yuko products in varying ways to achieve a smooth, healthy and moisturised straightening result.

Attendees also learnt about Yuko Protection Treatments, which can be utilised during a Yuko straightening process, before or after colour services or with other technical systems.

Hairdressers in attendance left their session with a myriad of new skills and a new-found respect for maintaining the integrity of the hair and minuscule attention to detail – both pivotal facets within the Japanese hairdressing industry. Satoshi personified these qualities to a tee, showcasing Japanese hair traditions we Aussies would do well to emulate.
