Hair tattooist carves a niche

21 year old Michael Aber has been passionate about body art for most of his adult life and last year decided to extend his career and become a tattooist – without the ink.

At the age of 15, a four year hairdressing apprenticeship with Christiane’s Hair Design landed Michael Aber a place as part of the men’s grooming team at Totally Male Bella Vista. Qualified as both a barber and a hairdresser, it is however the art of hair tattooing that has seen the rise of Michael’s profile.

“The hair tattooing trend attracts people from all walks of life, from pre-teens to guys in their 40’s,” says Michael. “My most famous client has been Lars Peterson, radio presenter on Mix 106.5 but I’m still waiting for the day a sports star walks through the door!”

At Totally Male, Michael works as a hair tattooist and uses a traditional cut throat blade to carefully etch out designs on his clients’ hair creating intricate patterns on heads from tribal patterns to flames and wording.

“I have always been quite creative and I began sketching hair tattoo designs on paper, then moved on to practicing on the heads of my very supportive friends!” says Michael. “A client might request any design, from tribal patterns or flames through to initials or a sports team emblem.”

As hair grows relatively quickly, the designs last approximately one week, allowing consumers to change the design of their hair tattoo on a regular basis costing anywhere between $5 and $100 depending on the complexity of the design.

“If a big footy game is coming up, a fan might come in to Totally Male and ask for his team’s name to be written into his hair,” says Michael. “They’re also popular during school holidays as they have generally grown out by the time the kids return to school.”
