A beauty obsession with a side of food, Styleicons spends five minutes with blogger Valerie Chan of Ponikuta.
Valerie Chan of Ponikuta
What is your blog called? How did you come up with the name?
Ponikuta. I came up with the word Ponikuta when I was 14 years old. I wanted a username that is original and no one else would have taken it for ease of registration with accounts. For some reason, it stuck with me ever since and sometimes readers refer me as Ponikuta instead of my name.
When did you start blogging?
2004, the year I moved to Australia.
What is your blog about, why did you choose to blog about that topic?
The blog started as a personal online diary to share among friends and family. Throughout the years, it became apparent that my obsession is with beauty and it is now mostly about beauty reviews, a little about food (as I do love my food) and personal anecdote of my random encounters.
Do you blog full-time or part time?
I blog part time (mostly on the weekend, preferably with my dog Belle on my lap); if I were to do this full time it would either kill my passion or I’d get sick of blogging altogether. So I am really grateful for being able to work and blog at the same time.
I work in digital advertising and prior to blogging, I was a student in Malaysia.

What is the best thing about blogging?
The freedom of able to write the things that matters to me the most and the opportunities that comes with it after years of hard work.
What have you been involved in recently?
To be honest, there are not many opportunities here in Melbourne for bloggers but being the founder of MBBE (Melbourne Beauty Blogger Event) is definitely one of the best things I’ve done for the blogging community here. It’s an ongoing project so it can only be better each year.
Any last words?
Embrace yourself, makeup is to enhance and should never mask your true beauty.
