NYFW: Wella for Peter Som

Wella Professionals lead stylist, Christopher Dove collaborated with Peter Som to create a hair look that was in perfect balance with the collection.

An eclectic mash-up of early eighties NYC downtowners photographed by Amy Arbus, mixed with the romance of Paris, Som wove a patchwork of patterns, textures and colours in the collection’s designs.

The finished hair look was simple and sleek, creating a smaller head shape to complement the silhouette of the clothing featuring high necklines, volume, and structure.

“I felt that the hair look should not distract from the beautiful and intricate detail of the clothing. It needed to be simple, sleek, and elegant because that’s the kind of woman who will wear this clothing, but also able to make a bold statement with minimalistic hair and make-up,” said Christopher Dove, Wella Professionals lead stylist.

NYFW: Wella for Peter Som

Oozing with downtown cool and a spirit of feminine nonchalance, Eugene Souleiman faced a style challenge at the Peter Som collection show – writes Sophia Wang.

Som put on a show that was a bit “Courtney Astor meets Courtney Love,” he said; a pleasurable paradox, mixing boyish with soft feminine.

There was street, hippie, girly, retro, every kind of cool that exists on the streets of New York as Som flaunted lace, collared shirts, floral and metallic animal prints – eclectic does not begin to describe the variety.

Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professionals Global Creative Director, was the brain faced with the challenge of styling the hair for this collection.

“Peter’s collection this season has a slightly harder edge to it,” Eugene said, “I wanted to create a hair look that comes from an opposite place to give a little tension to the look”.

The result was a mix between bed hair and street hair, with streaks of colour.

“I always like the contrast between sharp clothes and raw hair and this show gave me a brilliant opportunity to play with this,” said Eugene.

“It’s all about attitude and strength,” he said, the hair was treated like denim and the coloured pieces gave it more dimension and spontaneity.

NYFW: Wella for Peter Som

Wella Professionals Global Creative Director Eugene Souleiman let the concept of contrast be his guide at Peter Som’s AW’12 Collection Show.

The hair look at the AW ’12 Peter Som show in New York represented a new direction for a new season with contrast playing a key role.

Eugene Souleiman for Wella Professionals

“The Peter Som collection this season is very pared back and led by strict shapes and colours, so I wanted to create a graphic look that worked with the collection but at the same time was not too harsh” said Eugene Souleiman, Global Creative Director, Care and Styling, Wella Professionals.

“This look is all about tension; tension from the contrast of the small sleek head shape against the full wildness and texture at the back of the hair, and tension between the shine and precision of the top section against the arid rawness of the longer lengths”, added Eugene.

Get the Look:
1. Start with clean freshly washed and conditioned hair, using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner, to ensure hair is in perfect condition.
2. Prep hair with Wella Professionals Stay Brilliant Color Protecting Lotion and then blow dry hair with a round brush to create texture.
3. Section the hair at the front of hair and create a deep side parting. Smooth hair down and spray with Wella Professionals Perfect Setting to create a smooth and sleek finish, comb this through so that the hair is flat to the head and finish with Wella Professionals Stay Styled hairspray – spraying close to the hair to give a ‘gel like’ finish.

4. Pull the hair back behind the ears and create a low, tight pony tail at the nape of the neck.
5. Spray the ponytail with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray to add texture and twist hair into a bun and secure with hair pins. ‘Set’ hair by applying heat from a blow dryer (a blow dry hood is perfect for this).
6. When hair is completely dry, remove the pins and pony tail and allow the bun to come undone so that the hair falls on the back of the head in matte, textured waves.
7. To create more volume and texture, lift random sections of the hair, back brush and spray with Wella Professionals Stay Styled hairspray.
