Nestled on the bustling Coogee Bay Road in Coogee is the edgy and industrially designed Brown Sugar Hair, proving it was exactly what the beachside suburb was craving, securing a nomination for Salon Design at this years’ Hair Expo.

Opened on the 8th November 2012, the salon was fitted out by Brown Sugar Founder and Director, Eoin Daniels, and Topknot Carpentry and Joinery, and captures the vintage and indulgent vibe that co-owner Karen Wyse envisioned.

A recycled and eco-friendly feel was the main basis behind Karen’s creative vision for the salon, so she focused on retaining most of the original features, structure and materials in the empty shell of the salon.

“We retained the original 100 year old brick walls and ceilings, and used old, damaged timber floor joists, cleaned and milled them down to make our stations and internal linings,” said Karen. “All of the timber beams and steel frames were recycled so we kept the use of new raw materials to a minimum to retain the natural raw look we desired.”

Taking the eco-friendly route, Karen insulated the floor and ceiling, fitted energy saving LED lighting to cut costs by 30%, installed appliances with the best energy saving rating possible.

“We did a lot of research and felt that Sydney lacked salons that had incorporated this design into their premises, so that really gave us the confidence in our idea and it made us realise that if we pulled it off, we’d be a totally unique salon.”

And that, it is. The concept of the salon comes together beautifully creating an overall warm and inviting atmosphere. The exposed brick walls and torn-away plaster are raw and edgy, and the basin room is its own sanctuary away from the busy salon area. It’s moody, yet modern and completely luxurious, making Brown Sugar’s Hair Expo nomination absolutely well deserved.
