Lola Wigg Hair Cafe

By Amy Vidaic

Established in 1942, Lola Wigg Hair Café is nestled in the CBD of Albury in one of the town’s oldest heritage-listed buildings. Named after Lola Wigg, the salon’s original owner, it has a 68-year history and has only ever had four changes of ownership.

Current owner, Bree Brown has headed up Lola Wigg Hair Cafe since 1995 and now shares the joy and challenges with her second partner Billie-Jo. The salon now has two co-directors and a full team of 10 talented professionals.

Recently crowned “Most Outstanding Business” in the Local Chamber of Business Awards 2009, it has just undergone a major refurbishment.

“Our business plan is to redecorate every five years – it’s vital we keep up-to-date in design as it reflects our perspective on fashion and keep our clients excited,” says Bree.

When deciding on how to re-decorate, Bree and Billie-Jo individually wrote down their design concepts and when it came time to collaborate, they realised they had the same ideas and visions.

Both inspired by New York warehouses, they wanted the salon to exude a homely warehouse feeling through the use of multiple materials and decorating textures.

To create the ultimate hair haven, a range of recycled materials were used. Second-hand bricks were laid to prefect precision, recycled timber with warms tones softened the cool wall and ceiling colours, and heritage 16-foot concrete beams added to the warehouse environment. Sleek and modern Two Pak cabinetry and a heavy tapestry day bed were also added to create more texture.

“Our clients always love our salon changes – whether it’s a new salon or a new service, we thrive on being innovative and our clients love it. We believe you have to always be re-inventing yourself to remain competitive and stand out,” says Bree.

When asked if the salon renovations had improved business, Bree comments, “We have absolutely noticed a difference in our new client numbers and client retention, and also an increase in sales figures due to the inclusion of more retail space and product lines.”

Lola Wigg Hair Cafe not only boasts a feeling of warmth and a trendy inner-city vibe, it’s also home to some of the best hair stylists. This hair season, Bree recommends solid fringes, rounder, fluffier curls and full, messy up-styles.

When it comes to colour, it’s all about meshing and smudging two-to-three shades from the roots to the ends for more colour richness and depth.

Also stocking a range of professional hair care products, including KM, Matrix and American Crew, a visit to Lola Wigg Hair Café will have you feeling like a suave New York local the minute you stroll through the door.
