When Skatt salon opened in Northbridge in May 2008 it was one of a kind – and still is. From its hot pink décor, to the 16 metre illuminated catwalk – perfect for fashion shoots and run way shows – there was every indication that the residents of Northbridge in Perth, where the salon is located, were about to have access to a whole new salon experience.
The retail space
Owner Lisa Grinceri opened the salon at only 19 years old. True to her entrepreneurial leaning, she saw an opportunity to fill a gap in the market – to do something a little bit different and create a salon that would set a benchmark in the industry with its innovative design and high fashion focus, while still keeping customer comfort in mind.
As much a luxurious destination as a hair salon, clients can relax in between treatments in the theatre room – which boasts an apple tv system – or in the spacious lounge area with refreshment bar.
The initial idea for Skatt salon was conceived when Grinceri identified a marketing opportunity that combined her passion for fashion and beauty. She was looking to fill offer a more high-end salon that catered to the Gen Y (16 to 35) demographic, rather than to older clientele who were already more than catered for.
Skatt has since grown to become one of Perth’s hottest hair, beauty and tanning locations and delivers fashion-forward styling, while being consistently on trend.
Personifying the clientele, the salon is edgy, fun and fresh – and is not without media recognition; The Sunday Times described Skatt Northbridge as an ‘uber salon’ – and considering its 350 glorious square metres of make up, hair, tanning and beauty treatments, it lives up to the hype
Being a full-service salon, Skatt’s design has incorporated several cutting pods and beauty and tanning rooms, giving Skatt clients the added benefit of completing all their beauty needs in one convenient location.
At the centre of the floor design is Skatt’s signature hot-pink illuminated catwalk where Skatt hosts fashion shows and events at the salon. Grinceri is also the founder of Skattwalk – a hotly anticipated annual event that provides members of the public with their first glimpse into Perth’s upcoming trends, fashion from emerging WA designers and hairstyles for the coming season.
“I invented Skattwalk to celebrate the talents of my team and promote the very best talent the state has to offer, in all arenas of fashion,” said Grinceri.
The open plan design of the salon creates a perception of added space, and has the additional benefit of enabling the Skatt team to easily interact with customers and other staff, as well as identify when other team members may need assistance.
The open plan chill-out area
Despite the open plan design of the salon though, the basin area is separated from the main salon with a dividing wall to give clients privacy and help improve relaxation, without removing from the salon’s open design.
Additionally, Skatt’s clever design plan allows natural light to penetrate to the basin area, reducing the need for electric lighting and offering a significant energy saving. Professionally, this also ensure all colours can be viewed in natural light when applying toners.
Salon products are prominently displayed on Skatt’s custom built signature pink shelving which allows clients to easily see all of Skatt’s hair and beauty products – presented in a way to rival high end department stores. The display concept helps increase retail sales as customers want to buy quality products they have experienced during their visit, enabling them to continue the treatments at home.
Business-savvy as ever, Grinceri also leases Skatt for after-hours fashion shows, increasing its profitability as well as bringing current and new clients into the salon – indeed, once they see the outstanding design concept, they cannot help but fall in love with Skatt and its services.
