Inspiration abounded at the inaugural Australian Hair industry Awards (Creative) on June 14, from the talented awards winners to bold shows throughout the evening.
Revlon Professional, an iconic colour, care and styling brand renowned nationally and globally in the hair industry, styled hair backstage for the opening show, titled the Greatest Show on Earth, with a circus theme complete with conceptual animal costumes, dancers, aerialists and host Adam Williams as the ringmaster.
We spoke to industry legend and Revlon Professional National Artistic Ambassador Uros Mikic for exclusive backstage insights on this hair art extravaganza.
“The theme and concept behind the show was circus and all the wonderful characters and animals you see at a circus,” Uros said. “We loved the movie The Greatest Showman and how it brought the circus to life in a high-end, quirky and cool way and we wanted to bring that showmanship and excitement to the AHIAs show. I loved the variety of looks and how well executed they were by our creative team.”
Behind the scenes, it was a full suite of Revlon Professional products that proved instrumental in making the concept and creative hair looks come to life.
“We used the whole range of Style Masters. As you can imagine with the numerous looks that were created, they all required specific products and the Style Masters range has the variety we needed. I love this range as it has such a great repertoire of products that really lend itself to our theme and looks,” Uros said. “One product that most of us ended up using was the Style Masters Modular medium hold hairspray. It was versatile and used on majority of looks in one way or another.”
Colour was also a major component of the editorial hair creations, with the aesthetic theme being bold pastels. Revlon Professional colour technologies were instrumental in creating these hues, with a pastel lilac big hair look and a complementary platinum hair look with pink streaks becoming hero looks among the show’s many features.
This conceptual theme was rooted in hair fashion, trends and art, and we couldn’t resist asking Uros what’s inspiring him right now editorially, beyond the circus theme.
“I am inspired by anything and everything textured,” he said. “I love a great curly style, waves, textures and we are so seeing these on the runways and in editorial looks, but also I’m super excited to see our clients really embracing their textured hair and curls. The shag with its textured and layered feel, curly fringes and ‘slept in’ looks are all styles I’m excited about right now.”
Congregating the industry together after far too long apart, the AHIAs evoked the celebration, camaraderie and creativity indicative of the hair industry and the Greatest Show On Earth personified it all and kicked the evening into high gear from moment one.
“I hope everyone enjoyed the AHIAs show, our Revlon Professional team had loads of fun planning it and we were so excited that our Melbourne members were in the end able to join on the night,” Uros said. “Mocha Publishing owner Linda Woodhead and her team did an amazing job and I’m grateful that the AHIAs took over from the Hair Expo Awards to help the industry continue to celebrate how truly amazing and talented the Australian and New Zealand hair artists are.”
