Studies conducted found that around 84 per cent of hairdressers in the UK said that playing music makes the salon’s atmosphere more welcoming or exciting and 60 per cent of UK hairdressers agreed that playing music increases the likelihood of customers returning.
This translates to other industries, from physiotherapists to dental surgeons, all of whom found music helped to forge a stronger connections between the professional and client, and create a more seamless experiences. More generally, studies have even shown music is the third most difficult thing for people to live without in their daily lives.
The type of music chosen can also help strongly define your brand. Classical music can be used to create an upmarket brand, with clients showing a greater service or merchandise quality expectance with this choice of music played. Meanwhile, playing happy music makes clients want to come to your business and playing music in general is shown to retain customers and make them stay longer.
Research has shown 90 per cent of people in the UK would select a shop playing music over one that was not, while 78 per cent of consumers say it makes waiting in lines less dull – an unfortunately vital stat during 2020. Trending music and nostalgic music can also have positive effects on clients, while bad music can have the adverse effect – 44 per cent of respondents said that playing the wrong music would make them leave a business. Music has even been instrumental in clients recommending the business to their friends (21 per cent of responders) and purchasing more retail (14 per cent). Specifically to our industry, 2 in every 3 people say that spas and hair salons benefit from music.
Moreover, music is shown to boost team morale. 81 per cent of people work faster when listening to music, and playing happy music positively influences cooperative behaviour.
OneMusic controls the rights to use the vast majority of the world’s collection of music – millions and millions of popular songs we all know and love. If you’re playing music in your salon, chases are the music is from the OneMusic collection. And if that’s the case, you need a licence (permission) for the music use in your commercial space.
Eight in 10 people agree that musicians should be compensated for the commercial use of their music, and 87 per cent believe that musicians should be paid for their work just like anyone else. This is one of the reasons you need a OneMusic licence, a legal necessity to play music in your salon and fairly compensate the hard-working musicians and creatives behind the songs.
So support another artistic industry, entice clients through the door and start blasting the tunes in salon. 2020 needs it.
