Hairdressing education takes new approach

TAFE NSW Sydney TAFE hairdressing announce an exciting new education initiative. The new Bootcamp style training, available to new and existing apprentices, is designed to rapidly kickstart the learning experience of apprentices.

Through the hands on experiential learning, boot campers are exposed to and participate in a range of activities designed to create confidence and ongoing motivation to continue learning. Supported by new quality learning materials, with clear step by step activities, students leave boot camp ready to develop and refine their skills in salon.

“The pilot programs have resulted in high attendance rates, accelerated learning outcomes and engaged learners who are excited about their skills progress” says Donna Colombini, Head Teacher TAFE NSW Sydney TAFE Hairdressing. “We are truly excited to be rolling out Bootcamps in all skills areas in Certificate III in Hairdressing in 2017.”

Participants kick off the learning with a series of seminar style sessions to ensure the underpinning skills are in place, then onto Bootcamps. The Bootcamps are intense immersion workshops held over consecutive days to cement the foundations for student managed learning.

To support this learner centric approach, TAFE NSW Sydney TAFE has introduced an online App based program to capture participation in learning and connect students, educators and employers. With communication tools and record keeping now refined to a user-friendly application, all parties are able to support the learners as they achieve their goals and learning outcomes.

“Industry were asking for a workplace standard learning environment, which had many challenges for communication and appropriate record keeping. The new App has ensured we have full access to each other (student, educator, employer) and allows students to contribute to better managing their time and learning outcomes,” says Colombini.

For forward thinking and acting, TAFE NSW Sydney TAFE has the edge. Apprentices and undergraduates are enjoying the benefits of a new fresh approach to VET education and learner engagement.
