Preceding Afterpay Australian Fashion Week (AAFW) and leading into the country’s week dedicated to the runway, Common Hours and Wella teamed up to present the brand’s Resort collection, titled Alleycat.
The exclusive show was held at a private residence and inspired by elements of notorious old school club kids, with ideas of perfect imperfection, simplicity and individuality, making it the ideal show to stand out from the crowd and start things off the week before AAFW even begun.

“I call it ‘octopus hair’, it’s a lot of deleting, it’s effortless, it’s like air in the hair, it’s just cool girl vibes. The clothes are the key – we don’t want the girls to look like they’re going to a prom, they’re just cool girls with the best clothing but with 90s, effortless hair,” Renya said. “We’ve deleted a lot of the hair and taken away a lot of their hair that’s thick. I’ve pinned and tonged a lot of hair outwards and at the nape, so when they move it looks beautiful.”

“I was inspired by the ingenuity and naivety of the 70s and 80s, from anonymous characters to Patti Smith or Jerry Hall,” added Amber Symond, Founder and Creative Director of Common Hours, about the fashion inspiration. “Both hair and make-up directors have been close personal collaborators and friends of the Common Hours brand since its inception, so it was a natural choice to work with Renya Xydis and Wella for hair, as well as Daren Borthwick for make-up to translate the feeling for the collection.”
Fashion Week is officially off and running! Get the look:
- STEP ONE: Prep hair with Wella EIMI Dry Me and blow dry smooth.
- STEP TWO: Carefully clip away the top section of hair an inch above the ear, from ear to ear.
- STEP THREE: Starting at the nape and working upwards, slick hair back to the head using Wella EIMI Sculpt Force Gel & a bristle brush.
- STEP FOUR: Once slicked back wrap the section with a hair net and set with a dryer (on hot and cold) until bone dry.
- STEP FIVE: Once dry carefully peel back the hair net and spray the section with Wella EIMI Mistify Me Strong for hold before moving onto the next section.
- STEP SIX: Spray Wella EIMI Dry Me on your last section wrap hair net around the model’s neck covering the slickedback section to protect and hold it while you do the rest of the hair.
- STEP SEVEN: Keeping roots flat, loosely tong the mid-lengths and ends starting at the top of the neck just under the chin, so that the hair closely frames the face before flaring out with a loose wave on the ends. Finish by spraying the hair with Wella EIMI Misitfy Me Strong for hold.
