In case you somehow haven’t heard, Aveda is turning 40 and the iconic brand will be celebrating at the 2018 Aveda Congress, held in Minneapolis in October. At the event the newly announced Aveda National Teams will be looking back on 40 inspiring years and, for the first time in 15 years, Australia will make up one of these esteemed teams, joining the US, UK, Japan and Germany in this dynamic endeavor, writes McKenna Uhde.
The talented Australian team, who will be showing off hair cut, colour and style skills on stage, is comprised of Hair Director of David Jones for Aveda, Terri Robertson-Kirkwood, and certified educators Darren Summors, Sky Beauchamp and Rory Callasse.
Since sparking her passion for hairdressing in her home country of Scotland, Terri has become Aveda’s Creative Director for luxury retailer David Jones and has been seen in publications including OK!, Cosmopolitan, marie claire, and our very own INSTYLE. She is also a prolific salon owner, with Robertson Kirkwood Salon under her domain. Her extensive knowledge of the brand’s retail and professional stature will prove an excellent addition to the educational team.
Also from Scotland, cut and colour educator Darren has joined the team after gracing the fashion industry with his creative styling. He is known for his presence at fashion shows and photo shoots and was the first in Aveda Australia to get his certification in cutting. His editorial talents have been seen in his role as lead hairstylist in the Aveda National Style Team, and in the salon.
Styling educator Sky has partnered with Aveda since 1996, making her an ideal presenter to represent the company on stage. Sky opened her pilot salon Shagg Hair Studio in Bronte, Sydney in 2014. “Starting a business has been nothing short of a dream, challenging, passionate, thriving and enjoying every minute,” she shared. She plans to share her new business venture with Aveda when educating at the Congress to motivate current and future small business owners.
From national campaigns, editorial covers and music videos, Rory has immersed himself in the beauty and fashion industries, with 15 years of experience as Aveda Master Colourist and Creative Director at Mineral Lifestyle Salon. True to the Aveda morale, Rory has used natural products when facilitating educational courses, worked as a session stylist and as lead on the Aveda National Style Team. Rory’s well-rounded abilities within multiple industries has allowed for the forming of extensive techniques and knowledge that he plans to share at the Aveda Congress.
The four-day event will offer industry professionals insight and experiences in beauty, wellness, fashion and art, as well as sharing the latest trends in cut, colour, style and makeup. Some must-see events include the Global Aveda Jam, technical workshops in hair colours, styling, cutting, makeup and Atelier, the Aveda Business College Forum, and the main stage presentations offered by the inspiring 2018 global teams. The Aussie contingent will work together tirelessly over the next few months to give the best of our industry to the international Aveda family when they take to the stage – we know they’ll do us proud.
