It was the dream team backstage for Ellery during the international season of Haute Couture Autumn Winter 18. The hair look was designed by the master himself, Eugene Souleiman, using luxury styling tools and products from ghd and Wella Professionals, and creating an aesthetic that offered commercial inspiration combined with his trademark flair and originality.
The Ellery collection presented textures and fabrics such as sequins, leathers and silk that exuded luxury and tactility from the runway. The hair look responded with a textured look that was dually elegant and tough.
“The collection has a really strong attitude. There are elements of masculinity and Victoriana and there’s a very cool, real, natural texture involved as well. We’ve been inspired by the clothes to create this look and it’s very beautiful,” Eugene said.
“At the front there’s this very masculine, Victorian feeling to the hair and then it just becomes more natural,” Eugene continued.” At first glance, hair is contained on top of the head and then it becomes really loose. There’s a really beautiful play on the blending of textures, it’s really lovely. This look is about minimalism, it’s about how you can say so much by taking things away and just keeping that purity. It’s about the emotion that you put into the hairstyle, the attitude you have when you’re styling it – it’s very sharp, defined, it’s opinionated but in a very quiet way and that’s what I love about it. It’s really very subtle but very strong to look at – it’s pure and it’s beautiful.”
The ghd Air Hairdryer and Wella Professionals’ EIMI Sugar Lift were key in creating lightness and removing oil from the hair, creating a clean, natural texture. The EIMI Dynamic Fix was used to create a layered side parting, utilised in a way that allows for consistent distribution and no line. EIMI Sculpt Force was also used at the roots and combined with the ghd Air once again to eliminate flyaways. The hair was parted into sections and panels and then brushed across the head, leaving the dreamy, unique pieces that were tucked behind the ear, while the remaining strands were pulled back for an aesthetic that exuded a Victorian masculinity.
“We’re looking for a seamless flow of texture, a very clean, sharp and shiny texture that resembles something like a satin to compliment the fabrics used in the show,” Eugene said. “It’s all about the weightlessness and softness of a fabric as it falls down. We’re using that feeling and interpreting it in a hair style.”
