It was a chilly Sydney afternoon on the Monday of Fashion Week but you wouldn’t have known it inside the halls of the Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club, with clear windows in their upstairs Blue Room revealing a clear and somehow sunny view of the iconic Bondi Beach.
Parading the runway in front of those views were delicate fabrics, sweeping shapes and a palette of blues, aquas and whites – with a particular bubble wrap-esque texture providing a particularly unique feature – for Karla Spetic’s fashion collection. To complement that relaxed, resort collection was Oribe hair and Smith and Cult beauty, where glowing skin and gritty hair textures were a priority.
“Because this is Karla’s 10th year as a designer, we wanted to incorporate a bit of her quintessential style into the look,” said hair director Richi Grisillo backstage. “You’ll see that it’s quite organic and very subtle and it works with a relaxed grunge texture. At the back we have a knotted detail that’s more effortless and has a softer feel.”
“We worked with hero products like Oribe’s Royal Blow Out through the mid-lengths and ends to create more of a silk feel. We then used a Thickening Spray through the roots to create a grip and really enhance that grungy worked in, lived in texture.” Richi particularly highlighted the use of prep products to create texture, rather than standard finishing products.
This more grunge hair style and dreamy fashion was paired with an ethereal makeup look, created with the use of Smith and Cult makeup and Oribe’s suite of skincare products, particularly their moisturising, lip balm and body cream products.
“The look today was inspired by stain glassed windows and a lit from within feel,” said makeup director Mikele Simone. “The accents on the face aren’t dewy, they’re more of a glow tone. There’s perfect skin and a coral shade on the eyes and the cheeks, and in the inner corner there is a gel that lights up the eyes.”
It was a wonderful, clear day to be by the sea (and inside) watching fashion, hair and beauty that always skews towards the beautiful, the luxury and the daring, all at once, come to life. With the soundtrack offering the sounds of wave crashing and the sun gleaming outside, we spent the show looking forward to the success of decade two for Karla Spetic.
