Redken’s renowned Shades EQ officially turned 30, celebrating the “colour that thinks it’s a conditioner” by congregating important hairdressers and colourists at Melbourne’s Redken Academy to learn, discuss important industry topics, create colour looks and express their favourite thing about Shades EQ.
The day included 18 salons including Oscar Oscar, TKay Studio, Telleish Hair Studio, Hair by Maxi and Pearl Blonde, creating a variety of looks to show the versatility, wearability and trending nature of this versatile colour, as led by Sheree Knobel of Bixie Colour.
The day began with an important discussion on the pivotal salon facet of social media, as the salons discussed social media content, when, how and how often to post, hashtags to use and best practices that help salon drive traffic. The main takeaway was that it’s not just always about the finished looks – it’s about the salon, the stylists themselves and adding personality to Instagram with light, fun and authentic content to appeal to a digitally savvy younger generation.
Celebrating this important anniversary, salons each shared their favourite aspects of this versatile, quality-focused colour.
“It’s hard to pick just one thing but I would say my favourite thing is the shine and that it doesn’t break the base so it gives me so much freedom as a colourist to play with tone, it’s transluscent and it’s really conditioning,” Sheree said, while the capacity to create a wealth of blonde tones, hair quality and extreme variation in the colour were other key answers.
A variety of blonde looks were created on the day, from honey balayage, to ultra-bright blonde and beach and bohemian looks, all following important trends. Aiding in this endeavor was the newly launched Shades EQ Gloss, Level 10, built to create lighter, brighter blondes.
With 30 years of Shades EQ, as well as the #doyoushadeseq bona fide cult, this colour continues to build careers, aid colour artists, facilitate trends and support the industry. With new innovations still rolling in, we’re looking forward to the next 30 years. Happy birthday Shades EQ!
