A new study and infographic has highlighted the socio-economic benefits of Australian hair, showcasing the significance of hairdressers and barbers across national communities, age groups and cultural demographics, and presenting the industry as one of Australia’s most significant.
The 2022 study, titled State of the Industry Economic Study and conducted by EY for Accord, puts focus on how hair salons help not just the clients’ physical appearance, but their impact on self-image and self-esteem, mood-lifting, self-confidence–boosting, renewing, connecting and even humanising.
“Such benefits will not be a revelation to the beauty industry, but these important benefits of a visit to the hairdresser or barber are not always well recognised,” said Accord Executive Director Bronwyn Capanna. “Our new infographic ups the profile of this significant sector, succinctly communicating both its economic and social impacts.”
“The economics in the study include a case study on the hairdressing services industry in Australia, measuring the hairdressing and barbershop sector as having a $5.3B total economic footprint, with an estimated 20,413 businesses employing an estimated 68,983 Australians,” she continued. “As the infographic emphasises, impressive as these figures are, they only tell part of the story. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that the social connection we often develop with our hairdresser, and the less-tangible effects of hairdressing services, can provide mental health benefits that filter positively throughout society.”
The infographic highlights details that showcase the global impact of the hairdressing sector. For example, a recent survey in Germany found that just over 70 per cent of people agree that a ‘visit to the hairdresser is part of being human’. The infographic also focuses on the significance of professional hair products that enhance services in salons and barbershops.
Accord has developed a suite of seven infographics to profile some of the great achievements, contributions and regulatory challenges concerning the personal care sector, including the hair industry. These pertain environmental focuses, regulations and economic value, and can be found at accord.asn.au/about/infographics.
“Tangibly demonstrating the extensive benefits provided by the personal care and beauty industry, including through infographics, is fundamental to our advocacy on behalf of industry,” the organisation said.
