As major regions in NSW are expected to grow in the tens of thousands, the need for more hairdressers will continue to increase. TAFE NSW are doing their part to fill this skills gap with classroom-led, hands-on training that ideally leads students to successful salon work. As an example, the Penrith LGA area is expected to grow by 70,000 people over the next 12 years, and key training in of hairdressers and beauticians in Penrith is proving essential.
“TAFE NSW has given me the confidence to communicate effectively with clients and to understand the needs of different people so that I can deliver quality services to anyone who enters my salon,” said Teneil Holland, who co-owns a new hair and beauty salon, titled, Luxx Hair and Beauty Co., in Londonderry, and who trained at TAFE NSW Kingswood to set up this career path.
“If I didn’t get to experience working on members of the public at TAFE NSW under the guidance of my teachers, I wouldn’t be able to operate my salon,” she said. “Providing hair services on a mannequin is very different to working on real people, who have all sorts of different hair types and head shapes, and a vital part of being a hairdresser is being able to provide services on all clients who walk through the door.”
Teneil also points to the flexible education plan that also allows student to continue to progress on their career path. She initially completed a Certificate III in Beauty Services and then upskilled with a Certificate III in Hairdressing while operating her business and being a mother to two young children. This allowed her to further diversify her business.
“Business is booming for me. We’ve only been open for four months and I’m already employing a team of three beauticians and five hairdressers, and I’m looking to expand into nails soon, too,” she said.
Teneil provides one of many examples of success, thanks to practical, industry aligned training and specific experience with members of the public under the supervision of their TAFE NSW teachers.
