The Australian Hairdressing Council (AHC) and TAFE NSW have teamed up for a new barber training initiative aimed at upskilling men’s hairdressers in New South Wales. The unique support program allows hair professionals who hold a Certificate III in Hairdressing the opportunity to gain a (SHB30516) Certificate III Barbering qualification through a comprehensive and fully supported program.
This skills gap training will be conducted face to face across 16 metropolitan and regional TAFE NSW campuses for one day a week over 10 weeks. Each class will host a maximum of 15 students.
“We are thrilled to offer this invaluable opportunity to hairdressers in NSW,” said Sandy Chong, CEO at the Australian Hairdressing Council. “By upskilling and gaining a barber qualification, hair professionals will enhance their career prospects and open doors to exciting new opportunities in our ever-evolving industry. Those in the Project Barber program can rest assured that they will receive quality mentorship, guidance, and access to a robust community of industry experts and fellow trainees throughout.”
The program will offer comprehensive support for participants as well as a thriving online community of like-minded individuals and experienced professionals, becoming the ideal answer to both diversify and further train the industry. Participants will also gain access to an exclusive resource library titled ‘H.E.L.P’, which is filled with cutting-edge techniques, industry insights, practical support and barbering trends. The resource is made up for four models – Health, Education, Life Skills and People – and offers a variety of videos, podcasts, documents and links to facilitate this education.
Beyond these resources and training, participants will have regular contact and support from the AHC and have access to the team at HeadHunter Recruitment to aid with employment after the course is completed. The exclusive program is fee-free and fully funded by the NSW and Commonwealth governments, for eligible participants.
Applicants for the program must be 21 years old or over, hold a Certificate III in Hairdressing and must have been working within the last five years in the industry. The program has limited spots and applicants are encouraged to apply quickly, with the expectation of strong demand. The program will roll out from September 2023, with staggered commencements until the project concludes in May 2024.
