Two days of creative shows, a bold competition and inspirational artist sessions took over Toronto for the recent Global Zoom 2018. Nearly 3000 hairdressers from all over the world were emboldened by creativity, education and an all-new collection – REMIX – over September 30 to October 1.
Sunday was comprised of dynamic Academy Sessions, which offered hands-on education in multiple time slots. The Color Zoom Creative Team presented the REMIX Collection, with 2017 Global Winners Mia Sota, Dylan Tung and Maksim Sotnikov and International Artists Agnes Westerman and Sascha Haseloff showing off the looks. The Master Design Team also presented fashion-focused looks from Goldwell’s unique cut, style and colour wheelhouses. Colour expert Rodica Hristu and global cutting ambassador Jay Mahmood led the way in these motivating looks.
The KMS Style Council presented their insights into STYLECOLOR, with Australia’s own Ali Holmes joining an impressive global team of Lori Panarello (USA) and Edwin Johnston (CAN), Etienne Aijal and Simon Miller (USA) to present on style and cut. The pure Pigments Team, Rebecca Hiele and Lindie Blackwell, then showed off these new, vibrant and customisable shades in all their glory.
The Sunday also played host to the Color Zoom Challenge, with stylists participating in the three categories of Partner, Creative and New Talent in the hope of winning gold and becoming part of the Global Color Zoom Creative Team. This year’s contest was based on the 2018 ELEMENTAL Collection, with looks created and presented at the Color Zoom Live Final, where 79 finalists from 33 countries showed off their work.
This competition was held at the Gala Show, an event highlight that put the thousands of guests all in one room and also took the opportunity to show off the 2019 Color Zoom collection, REMIX, with a quirky show comprised of pop and punk facets. Bold colours, sharp contours and strong contrasts inspired by pop art were major features, while graphic minimalism was used to create an optical pop effect. The evening also began with an Oribe cocktail party to introduce guests to the newest luxe member of the Kao family.
The evening announced and paid tribute to three global winners of Color Zoom 2018. Congratulations to Nushka Barbosa from the Netherlands in the New Talent category, Roos Topley from the Netherlands in the Creative category and Lieke Nijenkamp from the Netherlands in the Partner category. Lieke also won the Stylist’s Favorite Award in the partner category, while Nushka dually won this title for Creative and Pedro Alvarez had some Mexican representation as the Stylist’s Favorite for New Talent. Stylists from all over the world choose these fan favourite awards online.
Another important honour was presented to the Color Zoom 2018 Hall of Fame winners, Neil Barton from UK and Rodica Hristu from Canada, who were awarded for their outstanding impact on the movement in the last decade.
Once the festivities had come to a close, Monday made way for the Artist Sessions, where educators from all over the world came to inspire. Champion European hairdresser Mario Kranki showed off unique looks, upstyles and Avant Garde creations in a fashion-forward session. Meanwhile, Mazella & Palmer presented their famous technical and creative education agenda. Finally, shibui showed off a simple, subtle Japanese aesthetic, focused on understated and beautiful craftsmanship. This Toronto event was sure to imbue its proceedings with a little touch of the international brand family from every corner of the globe.
A farewell party was the final event, congregating attendees at the Rebel Nightclub and acting as the crowning finale of a fantastic event and a must-see stop in Toronto.
“Hairdressers from all around the world enjoyed the Global Zoom Event in Toronto, a city which never sleeps,” said John Moroney Vice President Education & Global Creative Director Kao Salon Division. “We had two incredible and inspirational days with more educational content than ever before. This year we were delighted to welcome Oribe Hair Care to the global family of Kao Salon Division and we had the great chance to give our Global Zoom attendees a ‘sneak peek’ into the world of Oribe Hair Care.”
Attendees tend to leave Global Zoom with both memories and a passion for change, creativity and innovation moving forward, with fresh trends, new brands and bold ideas to sustain them. Wherever it sits in the world, Global Zoom remains unmissable.
