The start of 2023 brings in new possibilities, resolutions and an all-new PANTONE Colour for the year, with the hue of the moment announced to be Viva Magenta. The bold shade takes over from 2022’s Very Peri tone, and defines the year as a strong, naturally based shade meant to show things from a new perspective.
“In the age of technology we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,” shared Leatrice Eiseman, colour matching company PANTONE Color Institute’s Executive Director. “PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”
As a colour that represents strength, fearlessness, bravery, exuberance, joy and vigour, the crimson red hue balances cool and warm tones and can be utilised in the salon for clients wanting those strong symbols in their hair hues.
“I love creating powerful, empowering tones on my clients in the salon, and this is a shade that will encourage rebellious clients to be even more experimental in their colour choices, while also allowing the colour-shy to dip their toes into a hi-vis trend that can be strong and beautiful, even when created subtly, with the help of toners or temporary tones,” shared Teresa Weller, Director at Teresa Weller Hair Art. “Nature is always an inspiration when it comes to hair colour and this shade is no different. From a dazzling shade of crimson or cherry red, to more subtle incarnations, it can transform any style, adding some serious ‘wow’ along the way.”
The versatile shade can be created as a deep, fire-inspired tone, or in a cool, ashy red, with variations like honey or strawberry-blonde or golden copper, as the shade concept complements all skin tones. Cool skin tones best accommodate deep reds and light auburn shades, while warmer skin tones best suit the cooler hues.
